I will talk about the positives first, Jo and her crew were very friendly and responsive, we managed to book a car even during the peak period. Everything was very smooth from the fetching of the airport to the collection of the car.
The car was on the older side but it was clean and well maintained.
The downside was that the aircon was not strong, we rented the car during February so it was still warm in the day. We had to resort to opening the windows during the day as the aircon was not cooling enough.
The main problem started after the post rental.
I accidentally scruffed the back of the car with minor scratches. Since it was my fault, I rightly paid up all cost when I returned the car.
However when I asked for the repair invoice and documents to claim my travel insurance for the cost.
They became unresponsive and kept mentioning that they were “working on it”. I only needed the damage report, photos of the car damage and the repair invoice but somehow even after 3 months and multiple reminders, they are still working on it.
I’m extremely disappointed because I had such a good initial impression with Jo and her team.
Update, I did finally receive the documents from Jo and her Team

VERY HONEST REVIEW: Right from the start they were very welcoming and honest. I decided to reserve an older car for lower very affordable pricing and was not disappointed. The car ran smoothly and got me from christchurch to Franz Josef and Paparoa National Park and back no problem. I Highly recommend booking more than 3day to get unlimited Kms.

We hired from Christchurch Car Hire and could not have been happier. We had a group of seven adults for a 16day South Island Drive holiday and decided to go with a Christchurch Car Hire Toyota Hiace 10-seater bus. Turned out to be a great decision. The famous South Island weather forced us to extend our hire and change our return point... No dramas whatsoever. Jo and Todd were were absolutely fantastic. We did a full lap of the South Island in a Christchurch Car Hire Toyota Hiace 10-seater bus with a group of seven adults. What a great decision we made. Jo and Todd were so helpful and friendly. We struck bad weather which completely changed our hire plans mid-way through our hire. No problems. Jo's communication was great. We changed our hire time and return point and even got a lift to the airport. Thanks Todd! We are planning another trip in two years, and we'll be hiring from Christchurch Car Hire again. Fantastic service. Friendly, helpful and professional. Jo took the time to figure out what car hire best suited me. They were flexible by dropping me off at my accommodation instead of returning me to the airport (a similar distance). Time allowed so Jo waited for me to check in and then dropped me at the cabin. At the end of a long road trip the last little bit of service was truly appreciated.
The car drove well and Jo made sure I knew several things before I ventured off including the best place to get petrol. I had a few issues with the car because I was unfamiliar with the type of car it was eg not having a phone plug, the slightly odd way it measured fuel and everything being in a foreign language including the stereo. We had a fantastic experience with this car rental place! Jo was absolutely wonderful to deal with—super friendly, patient, and very thorough in explaining everything to us. Our flight arrived around 6pm and they kindly waited for us, which we really appreciated. The whole process was smooth and hassle-free. We traveled 1,400km over 11days and the 4WD was perfect for the narrow windy roads in the mountains and between stops.

Christchurh Car Hire, WOW! We have hired cars all over New Zealand and overseas for many years and have to say, this company tops them all. From the ease of booking, to airport pickups and returns, they collect you in the car you have booked within minutes and take you to the office a short drive from Christchurh airport. The owners are super friendly, professional and gave us a sense of "customers matter!". Although their vehicles are not as new as the big mainstream companies, their prices are affordable and the vehicles are tidy and well maintained. Jo and her team were fantastic to deal with. Jo promptly responded to any email queries. The vehicle we hired successfully travelled 1,500 km around the South Island of NZ without missing a beat and, although a later model, was at least 50% cheaper than the major car hire companies. It made such a difference dealing with a family owned company - you are dealing directly with the owner and not just with an employee. I highly recommend Christchurch Car Hire.

I got in over Xmas/NY in peak season, everywhere was booked and these guys only had one older Camry left. They gave me a lift to and from the airport, and are incredibly nice people. Nothing was a hassle and the car ran like a dream, despite being a little older. My only tip would be to bring a cradle for your phone (to use as GPS). Actually my other tip would be to not leave it til the last minute… still, the next cheapest place was about $700 more for the 6 or so days I needed a car - and no complaints. The people in NZ are awesome and the guys who run this business are prime examples of that. Thanks for yet another great experience on this trip!

These people were fantastic to work with - very professional, helpful and kind. My sister was on life support and I had to rush from Auckland to Christchurch and hire a car on short notice. The car was clean and drove well and it was a great deal compared to other companies. Steve and his wife were very accomodating for the 2 weeks I needed the car. We had booked a station wagon to transport ourselves and dogs to a show. One week out a friend decided to join us and bring their dogs. I called at 6pm on a Saturday and although there was a big tournament on in Chch on our weekend they were able to find us a van. Pick up from the airport was fast and super convenient. Staff very friendly and helpful. We turned up half an hour before opening on Sunday to drop off and were pleased to see the office manned. Again the staff member was super accommodating and we were dropped back at the airport before 8am. Will be our first choice on our next trip to Christchurch.

We rented a budget car (Toyota Vitz) so the price was right! Extra insurance was also reasonable. Even though it started with some significant prior usage, it performed beautifully for 2900 kms up & down mountains across S.I., and we could also fit and carry luggage for 2 with no problem. The GPS gizmo was also very useful; as a bonus, her mispronunciation of addresses and places was, at times, hilarious. Very satisfied overall, staff very friendly, would recommend wholeheartedly.

I just finished a trip from Christchurch to Queenstown with one of theirs cars.Unfortunately I hit the back of the car and I was really apprehensive about that , however they were very understanding and charged me a fair price for the damage. the guy who picked us up and took us to the airport is very polite and helpful.

From the start, Steve at Christchurch Car Hire was extremely helpful and insightful. Not only did he educate/give us tips on the use of the car BUT he also gave us great travel advice and places to visit on our journey around the South Island. Highly recommended. Our van was spotless. We were looking for a 8 seaters van with heaps of luggage room. They gave us a 10 seaters van and removed 2 seats and also gave us a little discount as we weren't using 10 seats. Very kind and helpful. Good value for money!

I have used this service for many years. They are quick to collect from airport and get underway. Vehicles are as advertised so very cost effective. They aren't new but still reliable. After hours instructions have been precise. When booking online, you are only making a booking request so make sure you followup with booking confirmation. Highly Recommended.

Christchurch Car hire are great! I use them every time I visit Christchurch which can be two to three times a year. The guys are friendly and efficient and the cars have always been very reasonably priced, reliable and very economical. Highly recommend!!

My wife and I are retirees from Western Australia and both in our late 70s. We have shared many holidays in New Zealand. We estimate we have travelled there 13 or 14 times since our first trip in 1989.
Since 2005 however we have only stayed and travelled in South Island. It has always been our practice to rent a modest sedan for getting about and used self catering motel or holiday park accommodation. We do this out of preference for flexibility not solely for economy reasons. Until 2010 we always rented a vehicle from a small privately owned company in Christchurch - Trusty Car Rentals. We were there in 2010. When the initial damaging earthquake struck and returned again in late 2011. The owner of Trusty had been, like so many others, severely affected by the earthquake and subsequent downturn in visitors to Christchurch/South Island that he chose to cease trading and sell the business.
We returned again in 2012 and opted to rent a vehicle from the new company which had acquired Trusty, namely, Christchurch Car Hire, located at 574 Wairakei Rd. Christchurch. They have provided us with our rented vehicle needs now on each of the four further visits we have made from 2012 until this year 2019 from which we have just returned after a month stay. On each occasion they have provided exactly the type of vehicle we have sought. The vehicles have always been impeccable. We have never had any form of mechanical problem (not even a puncture) despite some limited travel on unsealed roads and including a complete circumnavigation of South Island this last trip. The gentlemen we have dealt with - Adrian and Todd have always treated us with professional and friendly service extending their service to a prompt pickup from the airport on arrrival. We have been impressed particularly that this service has been provided at a rental rate showing very modest rise to that charged in 2012.
We shall certainly seek their service on our next, as yet unplanned, trip and would happily recommend their service to others with needs similar to ours.

Thank you very much Steve and Adrian for your very professional service. We hired the 10 seat mini bus and it was a joy to drive down to Queenstown and back over our 9 day skiing holiday. Prompt response to all my queries and nothing was too much trouble for them. Provided kids car seats and detailed information on what to see on the way down to Queenstown and on our return took all of us to the airport to catch our flight home. Service was above and beyond and was very competitively priced against the larger groups. (managed to save a couple of hundred dollars).
